This looks like a great board!I'm getting ready to plunk down my $$$ for a new compact tractor to replace mytrusty 8N, and have this question re JD:The JD 4000 series (I'm looking at the 4200) have electric PTO clutches.Do these work OK with a bush-hog-type mower, which acts like a big flywheel?I.e. on the old 8N I could use the regular clutch to "ease" starting of themower.Does the JD PTO engage smoothly, or all at once with a big clunk?Any comments will be appreciated!

The 4200-4400 series have mechanical multi-disk PTO clutches. You engage the PTO by moving a lever. So, you can control the clutch slippage by how slowly you move the lever.The 4500-4600 series have hydraulic multi-disk PTO clutches. You pull a knob on the dash and hydraulics engage the PTO. This has a "feathering" feature that gradually engages the clutches to prevent driveline "snap".But, no electric clutches on the 4200-4600 series to my knowledgeChris ....

Thanks for the comments.The 4200 I saw & drove had a yellow push-pull knob on the dash, for PTO. Therewas no lever that I saw, PTO-related, except the one that shifts Off/Mid/Rear.Have I missed something? ....

That is strange. I honestly haven't seen one like this. Was it a collar shift or hydro? So, it had the pull knob on the dash and then another lever that shifted between mid and rear? Where was it? Sorry about all the questions but I would like to understand it better. I thought I knew what I was talking about :-)Thanks,Chris ....

Chris... Please accept my apology, and disregard my last message! Your answerwas right on target, but my memory took a day off! I went by the dealer againthis afternoon, and the yellow knob that I so clearly remembered was on the*4100* HST, right beside the 4200. On the 4200, I did indeed find the manualclutch lever on the right side of the seat.The PTO arrangement on 4200 thru 4600 seems to be the same whether HST or gear.The 4100 gear has no independent PTO clutch at all.Anyhow, my basic question is answered!I'm still trying to make up my mind between the JD 4200 and the NH TC25D. IfI could just combine the best features of each, I'd be happy! ....

Ah, good news. Now there is *one* less reason to consider myself crazy. I have a 4200 myself but just today stopped by the local NH dealer to look over the Boomers. I looked at a TC25 and it is NICE. I don't see how you could go wrong with either one. It looks to be built every bit as well as the Deere and I like some of the features better. Such as the crank on the lift arm and the telescoping hitch ends. I still like the Deere hydro controls though. I'm like you, can we combine both some way? Good luck!Chris ....

I learned all about PTO control this very weekend. Went out to cut some fields for the first time with the 4300 [last time was with an 8N]. I pushed the PTO engage lever forward until I felt a resistance that seemed like it was engaged. I also heard the blades crank up. I set off down the field and every time I got into some heavy growth, it would stop cutting. I figured out that the PTO was not fully engaged and required a push past the first resistance. After that it worked fine.If you push it all the way straight out, you do get a big clunk form the cutter even at low RPM. You might want to consider stepping up to the 4300 for the extra HP. ....
